Acetic acid is an organic compound, and the chemical formula CH3COOH is an organic monic acid, which is the main component of vinegar. Pure anhydrous acetic acid (glacial acetic acid) is a colorless hygroscopic liquid with a freezing point of 16.6ºC (62ºF). After solidification, it becomes a colorless crystal. Its aqueous solution is weakly acidic and highly corrosive, which has a strong corrosive effect on metals.
Acetic acid is widely distributed in nature, such as fruit or vegetable oil, mainly in the form of esters. Acetic acid is present as free acid in animal tissues, excreta and blood. Many microorganisms can convert different organic matter into acetic acid by fermentation.
Colorless and transparent liquid, solidified into ice-like crystal at low temperature. It has a pungent smell. Can be miscible with water, ethanol, ether and carbon tetrachloride and other organic solvents, insoluble in carbon disulfide. Flammable, corrosive, strong irritation, can cause burns. Flammable, the vapor and air can form explosive mixture, in the case of open fire, high heat caused combustion explosion. Risk of explosion in contact with chromic acid, sodium peroxide, nitric acid or other oxidant.
Analytical reagents are commonly used. Universal solvents and non-aqueous titration solvents. Used in the manufacture of acetate, cellulose acetate, medicine, pigments, esters, plastics, spices and so on.
